We have lots of VLANS in school here and I am currently working through all the prep work for moving our network to our new IP range - so am setting up new VLANs to migrate things to.
The thing I want to know is this - is it possible for me to set up the VLANs on our core switch and then have all our edge switches pick these up without me having to set up VLANs on every switch?
We will be using mac based port authentication also (same as we do now).
Should I be looking at GVRP? Also, what does this mean in terms of me setting up ACLs in the future (for example setting up an ACL which only allows access to the proxy server and nothing else etc...)?

14th July 2009, 11:05 AM #2 GVRP seems like the correct thing to be using to replicate your VLANs across the switches. I only know VTP myself, but they seem quite similar in that respect. Don't understand what you're asking about ACLs, but they shouldn't be affected by the use of VLANs.

14th July 2009, 11:08 AM #3 Well, according to what I've read about GVRP, using it means you can't use dynamic port authentication (like the MAC based stuff) and the ability to use ACLs. I am just wanting clarrification from others who have used it you see, before I start playing with it...

We have GVRP on and ACLs work...... although I do get random ping times (1ms,500ms) when ACLs are on. Need to wait till summer to test if GVRP is doing this. I dont use dynamic port auth, so I dont know if GVRP affects this.
