Wireless N Speeds
Hi Guys and Girls,
Looking for some input as to why my Centrino 2 laptop with built in N wireless can only get a maximum of 1.5mbps throughput to and from the Netgear WNR3500. Im pulling files via Gigabit wired PCs so I know its the wireless. Got the latest drivers and firmware etc etc.
I have a support call open with Netgear but they are morons, the first 3 replys asked me how fast my internet connection should be and who provided it!

Is it ok connected to other wireless routers/aps ?

In addition, I have used netstumbler to check for other channels interfearing and tried others just incase.

I had a Linksys N router before and got over 6mbps with the exact same setup (was RMAed tho).

So Netgear seem to think a sustained transfer speed of 1.3MB/sec on a 150+Mbps link speed is VERY FAST! Despite getting 1.6MB/sec sitting here now on an old G AP connected at 38Mbps.
Does anyone have any calculations to hand for the theoretical maximum link to throughput speeds for N?

Theoreicly 300 megabits per second / 8 = 37.5 megabytes per second on a laptop with its antennas directly wired to the AP with no encryption - 20% for TCP/IP overhead = 30 megabytes per second.
Half it if channel bonding is not used and divide it up among the number of active hosts equaly in a near perfect situation.

So I should be expecting around 15Mb/sec throughput? And im getting 1.5Mb/sec. Are these the same and im just mixing my mb and mbits or is it way off?

I would be expecting a bit more than that unless you are in a really congested area for wireless or are downloading through a couple of brick walls. The 15MB/s is from a wireless speed of about 150MBits/s. Have you tried looking at the network signal through wireshark to see how strong and stable it is?
This could interest you:

Sitting no more than 4 feet from the AP, on a channel with nothing else on it in pure N mode with no other wireless devices with a link speed of around 150Mbps.
I will get wireshark installed tonight.
