    GoogleApps - Email Settings

I just want to check something with the rest of the community

I have Google Apps on my domain as i use it for my email, now at the moment pop and smtp settings are

    pop.gmail.com
    smtp.gmail.com

is there anyway i could change that to be mail.mydomain.com ?

or am i correct in saying you can only have one CNAME per sub-domain?

    Cheers, just wanted to check

    James.

Strictly speaking yes, you're right in that you should only have one CNAME/A record for a host but in this case you're lucky because pop.gmail.com and smtp.gmail.com resolve at IP level to the same 2 IPs.

    kim@prozac ~ $ host smtp.gmail.com
smtp.gmail.com is an alias for gmail-smtp-msa.l.google.com.
    gmail-smtp-msa.l.google.com has address 64.233.183.109
    gmail-smtp-msa.l.google.com has address 64.233.183.111

    kim@prozac ~ $ host pop.gmail.com
pop.gmail.com is an alias for gmail-pop.l.google.com.
    gmail-pop.l.google.com has address 64.233.183.109
    gmail-pop.l.google.com has address 64.233.183.111
    kim@prozac ~ $
Thus meaning you can alias (CNAME) mail.yourdomain.com to either of them and it should certainly for now and I can't see them changing it work fine.

So, for the benefit of anyone else watching.

CNAME'd mail.mydomain.com to pop.gmail.com and both sending/receiving work fine from KMail but it does ask you to accept the SSL certificate because it's not issued to mail.mydomain.com.
