    Anybody using SchoolGuard - comments?

I'm thinking of using the SchoolGuard web filtering thingy - anybody else tried it out? What did you think? Reasonably priced alternatives?

Not tried it. Obvious alternative is Linux + Squid + Dansguardian.

Do you have a link to SchoolGuard? googling it doesn't bring up anything that looks like a web proxy/filtering solution. Unless you mean Schoolguardian from Smoothwall.

What qualifies as 'gives more control'?

I've tried it and I do rate it but have had some authentication problems with AD -the problems seem to be pointing towards AD rather than smoothwall so far.
We are currently running the free trial.
schoolguardian is basically squid/dansguardian with some proprietry filtering add-on (say smoothwall) and a fancy perl web-gui.
The gui is nice and is much easier to use for people who are scared of text editors/command line. There are lots of features and support is excellent.

Yes - sorry - it was SchoolGuardian - my bad.

Really I'm looking for an internet filtering solution that is pretty easy to run and is very granular (down to user level plus groups - tied into AD) and can give and take permissions on rooms and users at different times of the day.

    Not too much to ask

    schoolguardian/smoothwall corporate fits that bill.
I'm not sure if it can do simultaneous IP blocking (room blocking) and AD authentication, it can certainly do either/or - best speak to smoothwall about this, they are very helpful.

You can use the mods on the smoothwall forum to mod smoothwall Express to get most of the features you want.
You can get dansguardian for the filtering.
Advanced proxy with classroom extension for authentication against AD the ability to turn a room of PCs off through a web interface.
There is also a dansguardian with AV mod as well.
