How many servers do you guys have at your school, I have 3, admin, curric and mail. I'm starting to think that we might need a seperate server to power our proxy software as it's starting to cause problems.
Does anyone have less or more servers than me?
I guess it depents on the number of clients you have and how much resiliance you want. we have two domain controlers per network a Nas and San for file storage and 2 sims servers (total 8 8) ) but are looking to create a forest so that data can be retrieve from either domain. This plus 450 clients and three members of overworked staff...
We run 1 admin server/network.
1curriculum network with 2 RM CC3 servers (plus a 2.4 server which we're planning to decom soonish, once people get all their crap off of it, and we have an email solution to replace NTmail). (am planning to recom the 2.4 into a file server or media or something).
So thinking about it, we have 4.
We have 11 Servers, 260 client PC's / Laptops, 500 kids and 45 Staff members.
1 Domain Controller / Public and Shared Drives
1 Domain Controller / User Home Directorys
1 Intranet/ Electronic Testing / Class Server / Success Maker
1 Print Server
1 ISA Server / Exchange Server
1 Sims / Pars
1 RIS Server / Software
1 Terminal Server (So staff can run Sims, Pars etc from home)
1 Laptop Backup Server (Staff robocopy there Laptops my documents to the server incase laptop dies)
1 Backup Server (Robo copys all shared folders, public drives, users folders everynight so i have a fail safe server)
1 Quake III Server
2 Curriculum, CC3 Windows 2000
1 Management, SIMS .net Windows 2000
2 URL filter/proxy RedHat (IPCop), Debian
1 Email server CentOS Linux
1 QCA KS3 Tests server Windows 2000
(If you can edit the options in the poll, I'd increase it well past 6 as the Terminal server networks will usually have more than this

We have 11 too, 500 PCs, 1300 kids, loads of staff
9 of ours were set to DC by the firm that installed them (not under my direction!!)
1 - Public/Shared folders
2 - Staff Exchange store
3 - Kids users area
4 - Staff user areas
5 - IT/Apps
6 - Kids Exchange Store
7 - FMS/ePortal
8 - Facility
9 - Curriculum Apps/Print Server
10 - Citrix Gateway
11 - Citrix Apps Server
Not sure why we ended up with so many - as it wasn't decided by me
I lose track of what they all do,
But we have over 18 servers.
1 Proxy (Wingate)
1 File (Software)
1 Altiris Deployment / VPN
1 SIMS / SQL Admin
3 Terminal Servers
Also 500 fat clients, 100 thin clients, 1200 students, 300 staff
I thought i put an option of more than 6, but mustn't have.
Makes my 3 servers look really pittyful now.
Right now I have:
2 x DC CC3
2 x DC 2.4
4 x DC (New System)
1 x Email
1 x Backup Server which also used for controlling the DAS
1 x Multimedia Server
1 x Proxy
1 x Contentcache
1 x SIMS
1 x Intranet Server
23 Servers, 120 Thin Clients, 25 fat clients
Linux Thin Client 8
File (NFS/Samba) 2
Internet (Proxy/Filter) 2
Library (Koha) 1
It doesn't look a very efficient use of harware; I was pondering this the other day. I could combine 3 servers (print, intranet and development). We could also double the number of thin clients without increasing server capacity. We have lots of room to grow.
2 D/C, DNS, DHCP
3 File Servers
2 ISA 2004 (NLB cluster)
3 Web Servers (NLB cluster)
3 Exchange Servers & SQL (A/A/P Cluster)
2 Print Servers
1 iSCSI SAN
1 Backup Server
1 Proxy Server
around 1000 users, 120 laptops, 200 desktops all running XP Pro
1x DC staff/student file server
1x DC Print & Applications server (& temporary home for QCA ICT KS3)
1x SIMS server
1x Proxy server (Linux)
1x DR backup server hiding in cupboard in sports block
1x Network management server, GHOST, WSUS, software distribution
I say, some of you either have very generous head teachers or don't know where the skip is
@Openhgs: I didn't know NASA ran grammar schools as well
