    Re: Number of Servers

Hmm, not sure how to answer this one

Old servers waiting to be retired:
    1 x Sims
    1 x ISA 2004
    1 x IIS / Apache
1 x Mdaemon - Very old version, half way through exchange move.
    1 x Symantec AV

    Other
    1 x Bromcom

    New servers:

    Physical
    1 x Veritas BE / NTP
    6 x VMware ESX
    2 x Apple

Virtual (on the 6 ESX boxes, using 4 atm)
    2 x DC, DNS, Wins
    1 x Exchange
    1 X Symantec AV
    1 x WSUS, CER2
    1 x VirtualCenter
    1 x Debian Firewall
    1 x Debian Terminal
    1 x Alice
    1 x Wininstall, Browsecontrol, ABTutor
    1 x Debian Webserver
    1 x Ghost / RIS
    1 x Print

The remaining old servers will be transfered. An additional Webserver and firewall need to be added. Also a moodle vm. Looking at around 25 VMs when complete.

    Re: Number of Servers

I came to the conclusion early on that just because your hardware can take all these multiple roles it doesnt mean it's a good idea because when it decides to hiccup it takes so much with it. So now I spread everything around as much as I can.

    2 x DCs
    1 x File Server
    1 x Proxy Server
    1 x Mail Web Server
    1 x Exam Server
    1 x Admin Server
    1 x Terminal Server (Testing)
    1 x Linux Dev box

Now considering we only run 170 Desktops (50 more soon enough) and 40 odd laptops that does seem alot now I look at it but at least everything is spread around nicely.
Theres some servers you must have 2 of at least DCs for example.
Some of my "servers" arent actually proper server hardware but are some Dell SFF PCs sat on a shelf in my rack but these are the Exam Server (Not needed all year round and limited use when in use) and my two test servers, one for Linux and one for Terminal Services.

No option for 0 servers? Are we really the only school to not have a server?

Sorry, that was rude, do you have computers? or the internet? and possibly have them communicating with each other? otherwise you're about 10-15+ years behind

Are you a High School? You can get away with it at Primary Level (depending on the size) but for a high school not to have a server.......... Im guessing you dont have too many PCs either and the man is chasing you about Computer to pupil ratio ? That or you have some old non Windows network?

    Re: Number of Servers

Maybe they have a managed service with servers offsite at some server farm.

    Re: Number of Servers

We have a great ratio of computers 1.3 ish students per computer if I include laptops. The oldest 4 years old computers should being phased out this year for some new dual core desktops. But only half are networked. Well excluding the wireless laptops I would say 1 third of the desktops are networked. No IT suite as its not needed here according to management and due to the kids (our students have moderate learning difficulty’s and/or behaviour difficulty’s) everyone in managements decided no more then 1 computer with internet access per room as the general rule.

“and possibly have them communicating with each other?”
We are still in the Dark Age’s with a peer to peer network. Virus checker updates are fun before I started someone went around and did it all manually via CD. As soon as I started I automated the half that are networked.

I did try and talk to management about getting a server but I couldn’t justify the cost or come up with any good reasons to get one. Time saving was the only reason but they prefer to pay me for extra hours over getting a server. There really isn’t any benefit for us. Bit of a unique situation we are in I guess after reading everyone else’s posts.

“Are you a High School? You can get away with it at Primary Level (depending on the size)”
Special needs secondly school with 60 ish computers + laptops and 70ish pupils.

    Re: Number of Servers

At the Primary schools I usually have 2 servers.

1x W2k3 Server doing the usual AD stuff/WSUS/File and Print.
1x Linux server doing DNS/DHCP/Web Proxy.

    At the High School

    2x Admin servers for SIMS.Net

    1x Linux Terminal Server
    1x Linux Mail Server
    2x Linux Web Servers
    1x Linux Development server

    1x Exchange Server
    1x File & Print
    2x DCs
7x Random Windows Servers that I can't remeber what they do.

    Re: Number of Servers

    I should clarify that.

No 1 is a DC with File and Print etc.
    No 2 runs sims.net

At least I think that's how it's setup. They run a seperate 'admin' domain on a seeprate VLAN to everything else.
