Came in this morning to find quite a few locations with no network access (limited or no connectivity in XP taskbar). In some places reseting the relavent switch worked but in others it didn't work.
This has only affected small 8-port switches but the bigger 24port, 48 port etc are all fine
And ideas?

Could be broadcast storms, maybe the larger switches have broadcast storm protection.
You should monitor the traffic with something like ethereal and look for broadcast packets.

Is STP turned on on large switches and not on smaller ones? If so then CyberNerd is spot on.
You have something plugged into the network that is causing this problem..........or..... the infamous patch lead plugged into two outlets!!
ethereal will help isolate this.
