    DHCP confusion

Getting a very strange problem with our DHCP addresses..

We were originally relying on our LEA (Salford) for DHCP, but about a month ago we moved to our own and had them switch theirs off.

Now we are getting odd problems on the network - Group Policy not applying (software Installations, Folder Redirections, etc)

We did IPCONFIG /ALL and got this result..

    Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:
    Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : salford.org.uk
    Description . . . . . . . . . . . : SiS 900 PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter
    Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-0F-EA-7C-83-A0
    Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes
    Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes
    IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 10.4.28.xx
    Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.254.0
    Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 10.4.28.xx
    DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 10.4.28.xx
    DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 10.4.28.xx
    10.4.28.xx
    Primary WINS Server . . . . . . . : 10.1.198.xx
    Secondary WINS Server . . . . . . : 10.1.198.xx
    10.1.1.x

    Lease Obtained. . . . . . . . . . : 30 March 2006 10:26:07
    Lease Expires . . . . . . . . . . : 30 March 2006 17:26:07
The lines in red are the problem.. they are from the LEA - not our DHCP server, but the rest of it IS from our DHCP..

The only 2 solutions we have is to A) Move to Static IPs or B) add in our own DNS Suffix (pupils.mhs.internal). We have currently gone for option B which seems to be working.

Salford are advising that our scope is inactive on their side, but we still get their suffix and WINS info through..

Anyone know how to block this or know why its happening?

You can set the DNS suffix in the Group Policies.
You can set the WINS server in the DHCP scope options.

    D'oh! forgot about GPO :?
As for WINS we arent using WINS on the network for the kids so need to try and block it . (Port 137?)

There's still quite a lot of stuff that relies on WINS. You would be better putting a WINS server in place and adding it to DHCP scope options.

I've not used wins in 3 years with windows 2003 and xp. I know some reasons why I will probably want it in the future, but you often don't need it.

2k/2k3/XP uses DNS instead of WINS now. That's why many problems get traced back to DNS.
