    Websense Enterprise - URL Check

    Morning All,

    A question for those who use websense (or know of it).

    Is there a feature or tool (either embedded in the software, or downloadable) where I can put a URL into a field and it'll check our policies etc and return it's category and/or the actions for each policy?

    All of the data is stored in XML files, so I could write a program to parse through it, but it wouldnt be live data and i'm hoping there's something already out there!

    Cheers!

    We use websense.. if you change the log server to the IP address of the server where websense is installed on, and then run some program from cmd, that websense uses, you will see which category it is stored under. Best thing to do though, is put a request into websense, and ask them to help you on this. They are very helpful. I use them all the time.

    Websense have on there website in the members area a URL checking option, enter the url in that box and say submit and it will tell you what catagory it is under, obviously you then need to know what you are blocking or not etc but may be useful for you.

    From a command prompt on the server, change to the bin folder, run websenseping...

    Code:
    websenseping.exe -t 5 -m 2 -url www.url.com
    or create a folder on your workstaion and copy the following from the bin folder..

    btuc320.dll
    Diagnostics.dll
    libeay32.dll
    log4cxx.dll
    ssleay32.dll
    stlport_vc646.dll
    stlport_vc7146.dll
    WebsensePing.exe
    WFCBase.dll
    WFCNetwork.dll

    I copied these files to a local folder, C:\WebsensePing, then created a batchfile, wp.bat, in my local windows folder with the following

    ================
    Code:
    echo off
    cls
    C:\WebsensePing\websenseping.exe -t 5 -s 192.168.0.10 -m 2 -url %1
    pause
    ================

    so from a run box I can type..

    Code:
    wp www.url.com
    and websense will return the category and disposition.

    Just replace the ip address with your websnese server IP and if it's on a firewall, open port 15868.

    You're welcome.

    We had some problems a while back with unexpected filtering results and need an easier way of checking categories than the web based lookup tool or trawling thorugh testlogserver results.

    I found this on the websense site.

    Cheers.
