Hi all, I'm trying to set up a student WIFI network on its own VLAN.
I configure the switches to tag the default VLAN and the WIFI network on the appropriate ports.
Go to the Profiles part of the management switch, set up the VLANs and push the profile to the APs.
The new WIFI SSID appears and I can join.
Problem is I cannot get anywhere, it's as if the VLAN does not exist on the AP at the network level.
After investigation it appears this is correct. If I unmanage the AP, telnet into it and configure VLANing manually, then re-add it to the managed switch it all works.
Question is; is there something in the management switch which I have missed? Is there any other way to configure VLANing on the APs without having to go to each one and telnet and configure manually.
NOTE - you cannot telnet in when the AP is managed. You have to turn off the management switch, reboot the APs, then since they cannot see the switch they go into default mode, only then can you telnet in.
Also the APs are not directly connected to the switch

Are the AP's running the latest firmware?

14th November 2012, 02:16 PM #3 We have the same kit and the exact same setup and all we needed to do was set the SSID as being VLAN 2 and configure the switches appropriately. Just a thought though - you did reboot the APs after assigning the profile to them didn't you?

There's just been an update for the AP from 3.0.0.14 to 3.0.0.16, I'll try it but if yours is working and you haven't updated your FW in the last 2 months...
There is a higher version number FW for the APs but they are only for use with a later model switch.
Currently
Switch FW = 3.0.0.17
AP FW = 3.0.0.14

Yes.
The AP knows that the specific SSID is bound for a certain VLAN as no VLAN2 traffic leaves the AP when it is plugged into a VLAN1 switch port. Problem is the AP doesn't seem to know about VLAN2 unless you tell it via telnet.
BTW the APs are not directly connected to the switch
