So it would seem I've broken a link between two buildings. Unfortunately I inherited one that was a copper link and when we recently re-cabled one end it now doesn't work.
But here's where it gets complicated. My cable tester says the link passes and is connected (It's only a basic tester so I'm not getting much information but it believes all the connections are fine. The link lights on the switches come on at 1GB indicationg a connection yet is seems that no data is transmitting.
Using a spare switch I connected them directly too each other and verified that they worked, I then went to the other end of the link, connected the same sockets and whilst it all looked good from a blinking lights point of view, no data was transmitted.
The results of my cable test tell me that the cable is approx 135 metres long so whilst it is over the 100m maximum length it did work. Where should I be looking to get it to work? Looks to me like it's to di with the retermination and tidy up but is that plasuable given it passes test? Or are the tests not good enough?
You're right, at 135m 1Gbps over Ethernet just isn't realistic. To get it working, try reducing the port speed down to 100Mbps. You never know, it might work.
If it must be this long, then I would recommend OM2 or OM3 fiber, or alternatively put a switch somewhere in the middle if possible. This would get around the distance and act as a repeater.
Just a thought - is it or was it originally wired up as a crossover ??
If it was, you would get these symptoms.
Cheers, that seems to have done the trick (Thank god for auto-sensing as I only need to change the ports speed at one end)
Cheers for the response, it was stright through and the cable tester does register that for me. However given some of the things I've found it could have been wired up as anything!

Usually with auto-sensing it doesnt matter but it can still be an issue.
