HP Procurve not displaying MAC address in DHCP??

Hi all,

Just had a swap out of a failed 2524 procurve switch, and i've connected it direct to our network, for DHCP to dish out a temp IP so I can then access the web panel to configure.
The problem is that I cannot find the device in DHCP at all, the device works correctly as I have connected a laptop to the switch and I am able to log into the laptop using network credentials plus the laptop gets an IP from our DHCP server. I am finding this a tad ber-faffling. Apart from using an IP address scanner and attempting to log into every unnamed host on the network, has anyone else had this happen at all?

PS I do not have a serial cable or a laptop with a serial port to hand either :(

Sort by lease time in DHCP you should be able to figure out the IP from that. Thats what i do :)

We've already tried that, it doesn't display - we've checked through all the reservations as well...it's baffled our third line support lol.

Are you sure it has an IP? Managed switches can run without an IP.

according to HP documentation, it should deffo pick one up from DHCP, presuming it was shipped factory reset, plus I have reset it myself once again?

Do you have any empty vlans you could stick it in then try getting onto the first IP of that vlan?

Also is the documentation for the same software version as your switch is running?

You could always connect via console to have a look.

Sometimes they don't, you'll need to set an IP with the serial cable. I've had a couple, even with a factory reset that just never wanted to get an address.

Edit: You are doing the reset with *two* paper clips?

We dont run any vlans here - looks like i may have to use the console/telnet system on Monday. I have however set it up and plugged it in but cannot test. Always a drama here, electricians were in on Xmas eve which I wasn't aware of, powering down for 6 hrs, which the servers ran until the UPSes ran out of juice - It only came to light on Boxing day when I recieved SMS that there was logging in issues via VPN etc. Reinstating the power must have a) tripped the sockets in the server room (which I didn't think had happened because the air con and everything was on etc) and b) Blew the original 2524 in a seperate comms unit.

Do you mean clear and reset together, yep given that a go :)

Just use the serial console. It's massively easier to sort this out with local access.

Top tip too is to do an erase from the console before you do anything. Then do a firmware update. Then do another erase. Then set your IP. Otherwise, bad things (can) happen.

IIRC (but I could be wrong) the 2524's do have a web GUI...used them a lot in my previous school...
