    Question Switch vs. Negotiated Speed

    Hi folks,

Here in our IT room we have a 3Com 5500-EL 52 port switch, connected to a number of PCs here with Gigabit capable network cards.

I've just spotted via PCM that there's a load on ports when copying files, albeit not of any great consequence, but via that then observed the connection was negotiated at 100Mb/s.

It seems that the 5500-EL is a Gigabit capable switch, and the network cards are also Gigabit capable.

Anyone know why it's connecting at 100Mb?

(As background, I know next to nothing about switch config)

    TIA

Hmm, having checked further, it looks like the 5500-EL is a 100Mb switch. We also have two 5500G, and I'm assuming G stands for Gigabit!
