    Question about 3Com switches (pre-HP)

We have 2x 4500G switches here. Over the weekend, for some reason they lost all their settings related to fibre ports being enabled and link aggregation, but all other settings were fine.
Been racking my brain all day, and all I can think of is that all the settings that were lost, were recent changes, and seeing the 'Save configuration' button on the web interface makes me wonder whether settings will only take effect until power-off unless config is written to the switch? And we possibly had a brief powercut over the weekend.

I'm used to configuring HP switches and as far as I can remember you don't need to do this, hence why it has only just occurred to me.

yes - you need to save the configuration on 3com. Sounds like a power cut or something.
TBH the web interface is poor, you are much better off scripting it from the command line, It is also MUCH faster to do on the CLI once you have a half decent script, and very easy to get the same script on all switches. I have some samples for 4500 series if you need.

here's a sample config I've used on a near edge 4500G. It will obviously need some chopping and changing

    Code:
    sys

    local-user admin
     password cipher xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
     service-type ssh telnet terminal
     level 3
    local-user manager
     password simple xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
     service-type ssh telnet terminal
     level 2
    local-user monitor
     password simple xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
     service-type ssh telnet terminal
     level 1

Yes, with certain models of 3COM switches you need to click the "save configuration" button after changing any configuration, as a reboot and/or power outage will lose the settings.

Not the case though for the older switches (4228G & 4250T, 4400SE etc) - settings are automatically saved.

    Excellent, confirms my suspicions then!

Thanks for the script example, very helpful. I hate the web interface but never have time to learn the CLI properly, especially as we only have a couple
