Turn off internet at lunch time
hi all, i am running a 2003 server domain with xp workstations and was wondering if it is possable to automatically prevent internet access at lunch time and have it turn back on after. ideally any teacher that wants to either use it them selves of supervise a child should be able to tuirn it on for just that machine. PLEASE HELP
Re: Turn off internet at lunch time
Not really sure there's an elegant way to do this.
First thing that came to my head was changing proxy settings in the registry (maybe schedule) and have a .reg to change it back ?
The idea would need expanding obviously

Re: Turn off internet at lunch time
If you use ISA server of similar you can setup a schedule of when the internet is accessible.
Re: Turn off internet at lunch time
how about having a proxy server for the students, and physically switching it off at lunch?
Re: Turn off internet at lunch time
I would look at investing in ISA server, you can set access rights and times for various groups. You could then just deny internet access to Pupils from, say 12.25 to 13.20.
Re: Turn off internet at lunch time
smoothwall's schoolsguardian does this and has a lot more functionality than isa:

How much does Smoothwall cost? All I can find on the web site is that it's "much cheaper" than other products which is not terribly helpful :-)

Re: Turn off internet at lunch time
You can do this using squid authenticated to Active Directory.
By default, get squid to disallow internet access between lunchstart (+ 5mins to account for lesson overruns) and end for everyone.
Create a group called StaffInternet, add all staff members to it.
Set squid to allow access over lunch to anyone in StaffInternet.
Create a group called StudentLunchInternet, set squid to allow access over lunch to anyone in StudentLunchInternet.
Give a teacher control over membership of just that group in AD, if necessary write a pretty front end.

PS Currently looking into content filtering as someone has spooked some of my headteachers over internet safety at a conference :(
Re: Turn off internet at lunch time
Look at browsecontrol by codework.
Allows a teacher control panel where they can allow or disallow access per machine as well as having timed exclusions and URL filtering.

Re: Turn off internet at lunch time
We use Impero Software and set a schedule so that internet access is automatically restricted at lunch.
We have bizarre lesson / break / lunch times and using something like ISA isn't practical as you can only use on the hour / half hour times.
Impero fits the bill perfectly :D
Re: Turn off internet at lunch time
Censornet Version 4 is an incredible filtering system - very happy with it at the minute. Although i don't have much to compare it to (apart from a 'netpilot').
I have policies scheduled to various user groups and workstation groups allowing / disallowing internet access at various times of the day. The workstation policies override the user policies.
Its a very powerful system and works extremely well for the school. Especially the use of 'Unblock requests', which makes whitelisting sites a breeze. It also blocks all secure sites by default, which i thought would be a major issue but it turns out its not been too bad in the last few weeks we have been using it.
