Where do deleted file go?
This was posted on my LEA forum and I am honestly scratching my head over it - any ideas?
When you delete files from a network drive where do they actually go? they dont appear in the recycle bin, and they dont appear in the server recycle bin.
Where are they? file heaven?
Re: Where do deleted file go?
Gone. Unless your using shadow copy. The Recycle Bin isn't network aware.
Re: Where do deleted file go?
Thats what I thought - but you try and explaing Shadow Copy to a user!!!!
It was just a general question but did make me think a bit.
You can get them back with freeware utilities that I have achieved before but to answer the basic question got me scratching!
Re: Where do deleted file go?
Well, you'll only have Shadow Copy if your using W2k3 and your network admin has installed the client application on your computer.
Re: Where do deleted file go?
Always thought that this was a major problem with Microsoft Servers. At least in Novel you can salvage deleted files just in case.
Re: Where do deleted file go?
My users files go in the recycle bin! Or am I at crossed purposes here???
They think it's a good place to store those 'dodgy' files too.

You can get recycle bins created on users redirected home directories, I have noticed that you often couldn't see the files in it after logging out. And then when you can't see it, it still counts towards quota. However if you delete stuff it goes to this recycle bin. You can see the problem here.....
I turned it off entierly from the gpo.
Re: Where do deleted file go?
Didn't realise you could turn it off - I'll consider doing that...

Re: Where do deleted file go?
Enable the following:
User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Explorer > Do Not Move Deleted Files To The Recycle Bin
Like I said before, you should really look at shadow copy if your doing this.
Re: Where do deleted file go?
We use `Undelete Server`software from Executive Software, gives you a recycle bin for any drive on the server, saves ages doing file restores from backup tapes for accidently deleted pupil files.
Is widely used in industry, well worth the investment.

Recycle bin is a hidden folder, it is placed on the users home directory, this directory has a quota. This quota becomes full, user deletes some work, this is then moved to the hidden recycle bin...on their home directory. Empty recycle bin no longer shows when they logout. User is stuck.
Re: Where do deleted file go?
Any more on this? [sorry to revive it]
We've been having lack of space on quota's - and indeed - on the partition space left too.
The pupil drive has about 150MB left at the moment - thats after a bit of fiddling lol The kids have deleted work but havent emptied their recycle bins :(
Whats the best way to delete all the deleted files from the user recycle bins? Turn on the GPO method of disabling the recycle bins for a bit then turn it off again?
Cheers

you need to do a search on their directories for a hidden, system folder called RECYCLER should show as the recycle bin icon. Delete them (be careful). This will remove the contents of their recycle bin.
Re: Where do deleted file go?
cool - guess it was obvious - but didnt try that. I expect to run into a "This is a system folder that cannot be removed....etc etc...blah blah.."
I just did a net send to all saying to Empty your recycle bins etc. Was quite amusing as heard one girl on one of the machines was a bit confused so I sent her one directly asking if she managed to do it or not. She was freaked out lol [in a good way]
I then sent her one saying to get back to work hehe ;) ;)
She said to me "dont stop sendin them - its fun" lol Naturally, I have stopped.
Bit of ammusement for a friday pm i guess ;)
[Off-topic - is there a way to send a message to exchange users that are currently logged on? i.e. because i need to restart it etc. Can i shut it down regardless anyhow tho?]
