I have manually browsed and connected to a printer shared on a 2008 X64 server on an XP SP3 x86 client, and installed the x86 driver manually on the client.
When I go to make a a test print the attached error message appears and nothing prints.

What printer driver are you using? I vaguely remember a having a problem like that when using the HP Universal driver for the 1022N printers. And I think it was only the XP clients which had this issue. Using the proper 1022 driver solved it.

We had that Bidirectional issue as well with the 1022N's (great printers!!) but what would happen is that if a non admin user printed the job would just sit in the queue and not go anywhere. If a domain admin user printed it was fine, very strange.
We had 1022N we ended up getting rid of them as they caused all sorts of issues for us on windows 2008 r2 and windows 7
Thanks for the info. They are nice printers and cheap to run, but sounds like they have problems with the drivers on Networks. I tried removing bidirectional support but it did not help. If I get a chance I might try using it on a USB cable to see if it might be something to do with the built in network card.
I am also using latest 1022N drivers, but does not seem to have helped. Also could not find a Win Server 2008 R2 64 Bit driver to download.
The LaserJet 1022 is not a host based printer so are useless on the network. We have got rid of most of ours now due to this issue.
