Quick question, on what you do for this guys
What do you do for all these education discs teachers use?
Ie collins science ks3.........
Everytime we have to reload a staff laptop, the teachers have to reinstall it
Do you think it best to make a shared folder, maybe for example called education discs, then a folder for each department and then put all the what ever disc it is, in its own folder with the correct name.
Or the same has be but just put into the existing department shares folders.
Then by rights the staff shouldnt need to install any software (I think that all the soft of stuff, staff they normally install)
How do you guys do this then?
Staff installing s/w? no way.
Establish how often this is happening and whether you need to approach the deployment differently...
Can it be MSI deployed?
Does it need to be part of the image the member of staff gets? (Does it need to exist for a large number of users).
If it can be run from a UNC path without installation that often makes life easier (for you) but be aware of network demand and if the user wishes to use said app at home away from the network.
I think if you get smart with the deployment you will save yourself (and ultimately the end user) some headaches.
List some apps and we'll see amongst us any deployment experience.
I don't think that a user should have to reinstall software themselves everytime you reimage a laptop.
We use sccm so everything is install automatically during the os deployment but you might want to look at using gpo to deploy software so that you just put the machine in the correct OU and the correct software is installed?
i often create a laptops folder on the shared drive and have batch files that install software if needed. its amazing how much software can be just copied and a few short cuts created so less of an install just a copy to appropriate directory and then copy appropriate short-cuts. Stops me installing software on laptops that 3 people in the school use
either I update the image so it is on every one automatically, or I put the msi in the staff laptop policy so that it installs when they log on.
Staff certainly cant install software here anymore - that way, madness lies
Our staff get given a laptop with the basic image, and can then install whatever they want from the shared programs folder. No issues.
Basic image here, no admin rights to install - all deployed via GPO or installed by us.
We use WDS to deploy images and as much as we can we MSI. We do not give staff the ability to install software as in the past we found torrent clients etc. We try not to run programs that require you to be connected to a network share as this limits the use to in school only. However, we are trying to utilise RemoteApps more and more
