DPM 2010 Backup - Cookie Monster

Hi,

I've setup Data Protection Manger 2010 for our Backups, since Backup Exec was becoming expensive to maintain.
Most Servers backup OK but a few always have problems with the cookies folder in the user profile. - This normally just results in a warning.

but..

There is an server with redirected profiles on it, (More cookies than Cookie Monster could eat) so DPM reaches the 100 failed files limit and "the replica is inconsistent" error.

An error line from the failedfileslog.txt is:

0x80070005 \\?\Volume{d1d45b15-30e3-11df-8924-00137267215c}\Profiles\Admin\Cookies\admin@hitbox[11].txt

I know I could add these as exceptions but that's a lot of work. I don't understand why it can backup all other parts of a profile, but gets stuck on small txt files.

Is there an easy fix?

Can't help with the problem sorry but do you find DPM 2010 any good?

I've been testing it for a few months now and found it to be an awful bit of software. A couple of things I've noticed are:

- Agents use large amounts of resources
- Can't see the file system of the backup drives
- DPM crashes every so often with generic errors
- Agents won't remote install sometimes and give stupid unfixable errors. Also requires reboot on anything pre 2008

The only thing I have working nicely is the Hyper-V backups but I am seriously considering going back to Backupexec with a jump to the 2010 version.

I do agree, It's not as good as backup exec. but it is only the 3rd version not the 13th.

I've had all sorts of issues I didn't have with BE12.5 -

It needed loads of patches before it would even backup a server.
This interface is confusing it took me ages to find the log files - I'm still not entirely sure where they are - where is \\?\Volume{d76456fb-b756-11df-bbde-0019bsfsfd95ey6}\D2765F51-2511-41687-A7F1-44224AFC9742\FailedFilesLog.txt ? on the backup disk?
A backup fails if more than 100 files can't be accessed - caused by it's hate of cookies
It got confused by files compressed on a SIS volume - BE had no problem with this.

The big advantage is the cost, not sure what else yet.

I just bought Symantec BackupExec 2010 for under £500, I'm going back to it for our main file backup.

I'll give DPM 2010 another shot on exchange, SQL, sharepoint and hyper-v but its looking like a bit of a turd of a piece of software which is a shame.

I finally got backupexec installed and running. Blows DPM 2010 out of the water.

I'll write an edugeek blog on my experiences.

no problems with DPM here, just set and forget.

shame about the custom partitions though, makes it a pain if your running physical and want to mess with arrays and stuff,

We added this to our annual MS Campus renewal as a quick decision in the Summer, after seeing a few posts that it was good and relitivley cheap (on here I think), but I haven't had a chance to set it up yet. At the moment we are running Veritas Backup Exec (I forget which version but bought in 2003) on older servers and a combination of msbackup, robocopy, and a script to backup Hyper-V VMs. We obviously need a unified solution, and before adding DPM to our agreement, I also looked at BackupExec (presumably needed new version and new agents but it looked very expensive at £300 per agent and their educuational pricing didn't seem very good/non-existant). Having read this I am a little concerned that DPM it won't meet our requirements.

DPM is ok, but I prefer backup exec now I have the 2010 version running. I feel a lot safer ;)
