Windows Licenses

I know that office licenses work in this way.

Anybody know if you are allowed to install Windows 98 on a machine with a Windows ME license?

I've got a couple of old computers knocking around I'm going to run some powerpoints off all the software has been stripped from them a couple of years back (when they were "put into storage") and I can only lay my hands on a Win 98 CD.

Not a big problem as I can't imagine MS would care. However I'd rather be on the safe side.

Only reason I'm asking is to free up a laptop that is currently performing the task at the moment.

The quick answer is 'No' OEM installs of Windows don't have downgrade rights. If you have a retail copy you could check the exact EULA, but it's unlikely... Volume licensed copies of Office usually include downgrade rights, I wasn't aware retail did.

Linux + WINE + PowerPoint Viewer?
Or just Linux + OpenOffice...

You can download from Windows XP Pro OEM to earlier versions but not from Windows ME

As you say - who would care though :)

If you are concerned and all you want to do is run a powerpoint presentation then just load up a Ubuntu (prob Breezy Badger best if an old machine) distro and use OpenOffice to run it.

I'm 99% certain that you can downgrade from Windows XP Pro OEM to any of the earlier versions and the back to Windows XP Pro when ready. Vista also has downgrade rights but these are the only exceptions with OEM operating systems. Anything earlier than Windows XP will not have downgrade rights on an OEM licence

Probably going to go the Linux/ubuntu route. Not done it before but it should be fun playing around with it.

So expect me back tomorrow asking how it works LOL.

Looks like I'll have to download the less than 192MB RAM version unless I can find a stash I hid for those just in case moments that never seem to occur. (Probably in a box with a serial port mouse)

Beware. Even though OpenOffice is a nice piece of kit, it does sometimes show your powerpoints differently (ie. messing them up)...

Downloaded Ubuntu yesterday.

Spent the later half of the morning installing low memory version (64MB).

Took ages to install due to the immense power of the machine.

Got asked for username ???? Was only asked for a password on install.

Got stuck after trying root and a few other guesses

Scavenged 128MB of RAM from another disused machine

Now 49% of the way through installing normal version. After being asked for a username and password.

Getting excited now.

Ok got it setup now (Edgy eft). Anyone got any tips on how to get video to play back on it?

Looks fine for the ppt we have apart from a few video clips we are playing on them (avi)

I've downloaded Easyubuntu but when it connects to download the packages it fails (to download them)

Pretty new to this sort of thing so explain things to me slowly

Just sorted the download problem.

I took the computer home tonight and forgot to change the proxy setting.

DOH!

I'm assuming this will work now....So I'll be back in a few minutes LOL
