This is weird....

OK I have office 2003 installed on all the Kids PCs
We have just started using Outlook/Exchange to teach the kids email

One room it works perfectly in.. All other rooms have this, interesting scenario

Kid logs in.. open redirected start menu - Click on Outlook and get something like...

Log in as either admin or staff and Outlook runs perfectly..

This is happening in all ICT Suites except one, I have redeployed Office to all PC's same issue even RIS'd the PC's again..

Short of starting from scratch and creating a fresh RIS image I'm at a loss..

Any ideas?

Where does the shortcut point to?

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office11\Outlook.exe"

The file does exist (as non-pupil user can log in and use Outlook on same PC)

Plus shortcut works in another ICT Suite - when a pupil logs in...

what permissions do students have on the microsoft office or office11 folder with regards to read / execute etc ?

I know about inheritance but was figuring maybe you can give them a bit more permisions on the folder to see if its possibly permissions ?

Although it does seem strange that all except one room works.

Have thought about that gecko, but I never touched the permissions - same basic install works in 1 ICT suite (different Mobo but setup exactly the same)

Will, however, try adding the "All PUpils" group to Office11 and see if that makes a difference...

Can you browse to the Office dir and run outlook.exe yourself as a student user?

Just use the File > Open dialog in notepad (or whatever) and browse to C: if you have the drives hidden. Alternatively just New > Shortcut (in test-students home dir or whatever) and do the same thing.

If Outlook opens by hand, it's a shortcut problem - otherwise it's a permissions problem.

Don't forget the Office auto generated shortcuts are 'special' ones which point to the application, but not the .exe specifically (so office can 'repair' itself if you delete the .exe) - but these shortcuts don't always work when you copy them to redirected start menus / across multiple machines. Make sure you have a 'real' shortcut to C:\office\path\outlook.exe. Just view the properties of the shortcut and check the Target is correct and viewable to be sure. :)

1) Will try that - C: is hidden from pupils so will need to try the notepad thing.

2) The shortcut in the redirectd Start Menu is a "Real" Shortcut as you put it ;)

Doubt its a shortcut problem though since the same redirected SM/Outlook Shortcut works in one ICT Suite

I'm tempted to uninstall office 2003 from one of the problem PC's then let it reinstall when the PC reboots...
Failing that I'll need to create a brand new RIS image..
