Flash player/content not working without admin privileges
Can't find this discussed anywhere but I'm sure it must have come up, it's driving me slowly insane!
Having major headaches here trying to get Flash player to behave nicely for normal limited users in Internet Exploder. As an admin user, Flash content loads and displays correctly. As a normal user, there seems to be a 90% chance it will either fall to load the player at all or present an empty player with "Movie not loaded" shown on the context menu when right clicking it. Bit of a pig when you want to use YacaPaca with a class full of students!
Windows 2000 SP4 machines, IE6. Standard install permissions on C: as default.
I've uninstalled and reinstalled the player a million times, given users full control over C:\Winnt\System32\Macromed and shouted a lot. Any other suggestions?
I'm sure I must have nobbled something at some point in the past which is causing ActiveX to misbehave, but I'll be damned if I can find what it is. I'm thinking I need to break out Regmon or Filemon but I'm not really sure it'll help unless I know what would cause the problem to start with... It's definitely not proxy related - the admins/students have the same level of filtering through vanilla Dansguardian and it's working fine for them. Definitely an IE/permissions/registry issues but... Argh!
Santa, help!
Edit:Another look round the forum dug this up :

but doesn't offer any resolution...
Re: Flash player/content not working without admin privileges
Latest flash is broken. Downgrade.
Re: Flash player/content not working without admin privileges
Thanks... How far back should I go?
Re: Flash player/content not working without admin privileges
To the previous version with the security vulnerability. Remember to decline the update in WSUS too. Otherwise that'll try and upgrade it.
Re: Flash player/content not working without admin privileges
Hmm. Just gone right back to 7 and still having the same problems... I have a feeling I've really gone and broken something here :S
Re: Flash player/content not working without admin privileges
I'd be suspicious of your proxy servers filtering.

this is pasted from another forum, it may be of help -

Hi ,
************************************************** ***********
Here is the details on how to change the security settings with Flash player 8.
You probably have Flash Player 8 installed and will need to alter your Flash Player settings as follows to get the program working (you'll need to have an Internet connection on your machine to do this): (*MY EDIT* logged on as admin natch)
a) Launch the Just Click program, right-click on the opening animation and then select Settingsā¦
b) On the first tab in box displayed click on the Advanced button.
c) On the web page displayed click the Global Security Settings Panel link on the left.
d) Click the Edit locations drop-down menu, click Add locations and then the Browse for folder button - Always allow
e) Navigate to the Nelson Thornes folder on your hard disk (default location C:\\Program Files\Nelson Thornes) and click OK.
f) Refresh the web page and close all browser windows before running the Just Click program again. "
Re: Flash player/content not working without admin privileges
Anyone been fiddling with your GP settings OutToLunch?
as you can allow/disallow flash through that remember ;)
I forget where exactly the setting[s] i'm on about are, but im sure either through having a look or some genius posting it, it's worth a look.
HTH

Re: Flash player/content not working without admin privileges
NT4 PDC here still, I don't have the joys of 'real' group policy! Been digging through my .POL/.ADM files all afternoon but can't find anywhere I might have nobbled ActiveX. It's been a long time since it worked reliably for anything but the things you don't want it to work for!!! Grr.
Re: Flash player/content not working without admin privileges
I had this issue with NelSon Thornes eScience. I had to upgrade my version of Flash to 8.yy from 8.xx IIRC. It's not as simple as installing over the top though. You need to download the un-installer tool from (what was) Macromedia.
