Had an install on a free box of exchange 2010 to try out the client access role. Unfortunatly the server had to be reformatted in a hurry to fill a gap. Now the domain still see's that box as an exchange server. How can I remove it completley?

You can use ADSIedit to remove the server. Are you running other exchange servers?

Yes we have the live server, and now another test server
Sorry what version? 2003 or 2007?
-Ken
2007 is our existing setup, the server I need to remove as an exchange server had 2010 installed
Because I have 2003 installed, it's slightly different as 2010 and 2007 run in the same Administrative group (I believe).
Do this at your own risk, as you'll be modding your own AD environment.
Run ADSIedit.msc
Go ADSI edit -> Configuration -> CN=Configuration <DC - your domain> -> CN=Services -> CN=Microsoft Exchange -> CN=<is your Exchange environment name> -> CN=Administrative Groups -> CN=<your admin group for Exchange 2007> -> CN=Servers
You can "hard" delete the offending server in there.
However, please be aware that anything you do can affect your exchange environment, please ensure that you have a valid backup of AD, and that you take full responsibility of any changes. I (like MS) take no responsibility of any actions taken.
I've delete 2010 many times this way as we're migrating over to it - however that is in my environment. Hope this helps otherwise :)

Thanks for being so precise. Have deleted old server, Domain still seems to be working and the non existant exchange server seems to have disappeared from management console hooray
Cool, glad it's sorted :)
