gpupdate is missing

At this school none of my PCs seem to have GPupdate, so when im trying to test things it takes me ages of rebooting to get the new GPOs to apply to machines. Normally this isnt too bad, i like having slowinstall.msi come into effect a couple of days after i leave but today im trying to test a new startup script and its driving me up the wall its about the 5th reboot now and it hasnt applied (i think) i cant be 100% sure its applying etc...

Is there anyway to restore gpupdate? or is it in some folder that hasnt been linked properly?

What OS are you using, XP, Vista or Win7?

Do you get an error when trying to run gpupdate? We often have issues with GPOs not running propely on XP and the first thing to check is the c:\Windows\Security\logs\winlogon.log file. It will tell you if all of your GPOs have run properly. We usually find that if an msi fails to deploy for some reason, it will stop all subsequent GPOs from applying.

its not a problem with gpupdate its that its not there if i type "gpupdate" into cmd i get:

'gpupdate' is not a recognised as an internal or external command, operable program or bathc file.

if you search your system for the gpupdate.exe can you find it?

Try copying gpupdate.exe from a machine that's working OK to c:\windows\system32 and try again. If all machines are affected, it may be worth running a virus scan. I've not heard of any viruses that delete gpupdate.exe but you never know!!

it finds it in C:\Windows\system32

If you go into a command prompt and navigate to there and specify gpupdate.exe to run it does that work?

yes.

ive found that nothing seems to work "hostname" etc... anything in system32 doesnt seem to work

Do you have c:\windows\system32 in your path statement?

System Variables are corrupt/Missing

Try this

Right click My computer
Selecet Properties
Select the Advanaced tab
Click the on theEnviroment Variables button
Double click path

and make sure you have these at the begining of the path


Windows\system32;Windows;Windows\System32\Wbem;

sorry should read

C:\Windows\system32;C:\Windows;C:\Windows\System32 \Wbem;

ive got all of those but instead of C:\Windows i have %systemroot%

Change that as its trying to look in the wrong place.

In that variable i found a mal formed path "Program Files\\Maestro Learning", once i corrected that it works fine
