renaming an XP machine
Probably a me not seeing the simple way out but im trying to rename an XP machine and i keep getting the following message.
The Following error occurred attempting to rename the computer to "TL-43":
Multiple connections to a server or shared resource by the same user, using more than one user name, are not allowed. Disconnect all previous connections to the server or shared resource and try again.
probably a simple solution.
log off, log on as local admin, then try again.
You've probably got a drive mapped to the domain controller - check in Explorer or just do "net use * /d" at the command prompt.
If it's not a drive then it's a mapping of some sort - connection with computer management console, for example??
Sounds like you're logged onto the machine / have drives mapped to the DC as 'one' user but are using another user to process the username change.
Try logging on AND changing the name with the same user account, making sure there aren't any scripts mapping drives to the domain controllers with a 'separate' set of hard coded credentials.
That has to be a record, 3 answers within the same minute.
Log in as a local administrator and do it then.
Edit: oops, that's four :o
What we do is take it off the domain, put it on a random workgroup. Rename. Restart. and then put it back on the domain. Seems to happen mostly when the computer account you want to change it to already exists in active directory.
You could just do it remotely:
Replacing oldPCname, newPCname, DOMAIN, Username and Password as appropriate :)
netdom RenameComputer oldPCname /NewName:newPCname /UserD:DOMAIN\Username/PasswordD:Password /Force /ReBoot
No, it happens because you are already logged in with a domain account, then you ask windows to connect a second time to the directory, which it can't do. Logging in with a local account only requires one connection, and everybody's happy again.

Doesn't seem to matter how many times i am logged on, just if the computer name has existed before. E.G. room20 becomes a computer room, no issues renaming them r20-01, r20-02 even if im logged onto all of them at the same time. However new computers in r23, happens on each one, unless i delete the accounts for the computers on the active directory. Could be just some quirk of our network i suppose.
I seam to remember that happening at my last place of work as well. I did the whole delete off active directory, put randem wrok group in , rename , add onto domain worked well.
We got the same error message a couple of days ago when altering some PC names.
Turned out the guy was typing credentials in wrongly,
When it should have been:
May not be the same thing but for some reason that worked for us.
sometimes happens to me way round it i found was to leave the username/password boxes blank when it asks for domain logon as it thinks you are logged on as some user and thats always worked for me
