My PYF has deleted all the accounts for all the students from Active Directory

Costs money plus it's only a backup system. ie, it would of been fine to recommend before this happened. There's no point now as the OP is not in a position to back anything up.
Surely you mean your PFY???
Just create yourself an excel spreadsheet with the details needed and recreate them.

Do you have a list of all the usernames?
If not dump the output of dir into a file for each of the home folders i.e d:\home\staff, d:\home\students\00, d:\home\students\01 etc... then load them into excel and manipulate to produce something you can import using csvde.
Then you just need to set the home folder locations and profile locations, enable the accounts and reset passwords.
I use admodify to do the home and profile folders.

It suddenly occured to me.... Volume Shadow Copy
Normally volume shadow only backs up shared folders right...
but the windows folder (where the AD files reside) is shared (but a hidden share)
I copied the old files to a cd, rebooted in safe mode, swopped the files for the "old" ones......

I'd already told the head about the cock up, and told him to expect 20hrs to sort the problem (2 mins per student, 600 students)
Looks like I can put my feet up for 20hrs whilst I "fix" the problem. Nice easy week ahead, which I need after the stress of the 6 weeks of chasing contractors)!

Don't be too hard on the PFY ... we all make mistakes.
My one was when shell scripting at my last place. We had a Sun box running Solaris 2.6 as our file server and I was running a script to find the location of unsuitable files. I then went a stage further and wanted to change the permissions to stop students accessing them or deleting them.

except the script didn't take into account folders that had ... erm ... awkward names ... like " ", or "."!!!
So I am there telling it to chmod on a file nested in these folders ... so I get /usr/1995/jbloggs/ / / stuff/dontlookinhere/ / /naughty pics/nude.jpg ...
erm ... except the script too the "/ /" to mean the root of the drive ... ok ..erm .. actually it took it to mean the root of the raid!
I looked out access to *everything* by changing the perms. It was only that a session was still open on a machine in the server room (the script was a cron job). It even had the Sun guys puzzled for an hour or two as to why noone could access anything.
It was 6 months before I was allowed near a script again.
And this doesn't cover the 1 1/2 months of work on FirstClass that I ruined by deleting all the conferences whilst trying to get around batch scripting.
Or when I demoted the wrong DC ... set the wrong DNS entries and killed the router ... deleted 30 students' music coursework and then stood on what I thought was the only backup ... erm ... oh crap ... and there is more too ...
Now I know why I became Manglement ... they don't trust me near the computers anymore :-(

My most famous was a "what does that button do" moment - for some reason I had one of those safety plugs plugged in at work, and it had a test button. So I pressed it. So the office computers wen't off by the trip - no real problem. But so did half a dozen in the ICT suite next door in the middle of a lesson :oops:
