Recent Windows patch breaks VLC DVD playback

Ok I’m still trying to narrow this issue down but it appears that one of last weeks XP patches breaks VLC DVD playback. It only came to light this week when so many people reported the issue due to them plating endless DVD's to the kids during the last week. I thought it was the disk to start with as it doesn't do it on all DVD's.

I finally found that Mr Bean consistently will not play, you put the disk in and receive a multi colour blocky screen. I tried reinstalling VLC and tried the latest version but nothing worked, at this point the teacher said that it had been odd since last week. I uninstalled KB973346, KB961371 and KB971633. When I rebooted VLC played the DVD ok.

I'll try to narrow it down to one patch and post back but I thought the info might help other VLC users.

I had the usual dvd not working thing yesterday! Some dvd's would work on some computers, some wouldn't but would work on other computers. Not using VLC, but win dvd or power dvd. Didn't have the time or inclination to wonder why, but maybe same reason.

I'm suspecting the KB971633 Direct X patch which i suppose could affect multiple apps.

I was suspecting the player/disk untill I discovered the problem started on about 20 clients and counting last week.


EDIT - also it's not all disks I have a test DVD in the office that works fine on the problem drives but Mr Bean and now a Simpsons DVD do not. If I remove the patches they both work. It could be down to a codec type.

Ok i've narrowed it down to patch KB971633, I removed it on several problem PC's and it solved the issue. I reapplied the patch later on and they seem ok now I can only think that it's a quirk of the patch.
