on most of my windows machines the system process falls under system idle process when arranged by cpu usage but on the family pc it was the same till yeaterday when it spiked to 67,506k and stayed there
not sure what's causing this but would like to know as im getting worried

The elusive system process can be near on anything in windows!
Have a look at this thread elsewhere as it talks about how to diagnose what's causing the problem in detail.

That doesn't sound normal at all. Just checked on my Computer and the System process is 240K on XP SP3. Checked on one of my servers and it's 224K on Server 2003 SP2.
Is your CPU use high too? What about starting up in Safe Mode, what size is System then?
funnily enough the system process is still high but its cpu usage is 0 but im worried about the high memory use as it wasn't like that before.
Safe mode makes no noticable differance but on my other windows xp sp3 machine the system process is at 0 cpu and 12k mem
any other ideas???
The usual Virus/Malware scan is my next advice I'd think ...
So when you start up Windows and logon, if you open up Task Manager as quickly as you can, is the System process already at 67,506K or is it slowly counting up to that size?
Is Windows XP SP3 fully up-to-date? Do you have AV and Anti Spyware software installed? I can highly recommend AVG and for Spyware, Malware-Bytes. Quite impressed with this software.
You using AVG by any chance?
