can any one think of a reason for sound randomly dropping on a machine? WinXP, teacher complains that it just stops using sound. Of course it is after the event so we can't see what is goin gon and when we go over it is working fine. Have used the on board sound as well as fitting a Soundblaster. External speakers are being used adn seem fine. Only solution apparently is to reboot. I can't think of any reason it would do it that we haven't tested.
apart from teacheritis what could it be?
User error :)
Maybe drivers/an application is screwing them up? Hard to say without more info. Did you check event viewer for anything odd?
Have you ever been down after it has occured to confirm that it is actually not working and they haven't just pressed stop? (yes, this has happened to me before :|)
On all applications, or just certain ones? Like when YouTube is buffering...
Might be some kind of intermittent fault on the speakers. I'd try using a different set and see if the problem persists.
Well the big problem is it is the music room so they instantly reboot to try and teach. I think this is part of the problem, any little glitch is sighted as this one when it may well be user error.
Apparently all programs, so general sound even windows sounds. Beyond that nothign else to work with. Nothing in Event log. Hence why I am baffled and the teacher is getting annoyed as we aren't doing anything (seperate thread really but why is it that just because they see nothing, nothing is being done.)
They are wanting a machine swap now which I guess is fair enough but I would rather fix the problem, especially as they were bought for the music dept to their spec.
if you have CPU usage spikes it can kill sound too. What is she running when it happens?
How old and what spec are the machines?
Buffer overun on the soundcard?
try flashing it to the latest firmware
