DEll optiplex 755
Hi , PC failing to load windows;
safe mode & local login ->Dell diagnostics
error code 0221 -chipset interval timer failed
ater redoing the diagnostics
error code 0146 -hard drive DST short test failed- DST log contains previous errors
event ID: 51 "error detected on device \Device\Harddisk0\D during paging operation
any idea? needs new motherboard or dodgy hard disk?
\Device\Harddisk0\ in the event log I guess
I would almost say it is the HDD
Replace with known good drive from another unit.
Put suspect drive into known good unit.
If the error moves with the HDD then the HDD is suspect, if it doesn't then double check the cables but it is likely to be the mobo.
The error does seem to mean the mobo is faulty ...
I would say most likely it is the hard disk. Backup any important data immediately and then perform a scan disk to see if it picks anything up.
I would agree with GrumbleDook also that changing the hard drive (for experimental purposes) should instantly show if it's the hard disk or not. Let us know how you get on :)
You can't put a value on how handy it is to keep a couple of empty portable HDD caddys lying around ready to pull data from a dying hdd.
Call Dell & they'll swap out the duff bits straight away. :confused:
It could be the hard drive mode setting in the BIOS i had the same problem with my 755s :) set it to ATA mode
First thing we do to ours is change the BIOS to autodetect SATA
