What the devil's wrong with IE?
This is a problem I have on my home laptop, and I'm stumped.
Basically this came to light when trying to run Windows Updates (actually, I usually use Microsoft Update, but the two sites encounter the same problem).
See screenshot below.
Whenever I try and run updates, I get error 0x8DDD0004. Now I've been to the links provided and googled these, but I can't seem to find an answer.
I've reinstalled Active X, I've uninstalled and reinstalled IE - still the same problems.
Other sites don't work either, I can't remember off the top of my head, but it's just the Updates one that's annoying me - I don't use IE for anything but updates these days - Firefox and Opera cope admirably for me...
Any ideas???

BURN INTERNET EXPLORER! I suggest e-mailing a microsoft tech and see if he/she knows anything about this mysterious error. Its certainly not something ive come across before
You can get an IE plugin for Firefox called IEtab which runs the IE engine within forefox, i use it and its brilliant

Re: What the devil's wrong with IE?
Have you tried to access the WU website under a different admin account.
As you have reinstalled IE with the same result. The common factor maybe your profile.
A long shot but it's Windows.
Re: What the devil's wrong with IE?
Have a look here and see if this solves your problem.

So do I, but presumably as it uses the IE engine, the same problems will occur?!
The IE plug in to Firefox is a great idea, although it can be a touch 'cranky' at times

Hi Indie
Been looking at the problem I suggest
hmmmmmmm try this,
Disable the Firewall temporary and then check for the problem ??
if Same then do this,
goto Start>Run>type REGSVR32 SOFTPUB.DLL and hit enter, let it to finish
then type REGSVR32 INITPKI.DLL and hit enter, let it to finish
then type REGSVR32 MSSIP32.DLL and hit enter, let it to finish also,
Now restart ur system and now check if same problem ?? :)
click start run and type REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuapi.dll hit enter
click start run and type REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuaueng.dll hit enter
click start run and type REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\system32\atl.dll hit enter
click start run and type REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\system32\wucltui.dll hit enter
click start run and type REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\system32\wups.dll hit enter
0x8DDD0004 - Fixed Mine!
Seems I had inadvertantly messed with my Add-On management. The
WuWebControlClass was disabled. I enabled it this way:
In Tools,Manage Add-Ons... make sure your WuWebControlClass entry is
listed
under the Enabled section. If it's under Disabled, find the radio button
for
Enable, and enable it!. Fixed me up quick!
Now, however, after loading SP2, it wants to have me install SP1 as a
critical update. Oh well, can't win 'em all!
Sorry for the long post
Re: What the devil's wrong with IE?
When I had a problem with updates, it turned out that the hard disk had a couple of bad blocks... run a scandisk with autofix and everything :)
Re: What the devil's wrong with IE?
Thanks!
@Preston - I too use the IETab for firefox, but that displays the same problems... grrr
@Michael - I've already done that with no successes...
@mrtechsystems - I painstakingly went through all your suggestions (thanks for them!), but sadly, I'm still having the same problems :-(
@Network Geezer: see below for my problems in trying another user account!
Ahh, another problem I'm having: if I right-click My Comp and go for the Local Users and Groups in Computer Management, I get the following error message:
"unable to access the computer <computername>. The error was: Library not registered"
(I was attempting to create another user to try this out on to see if it's a corrupted profile)
If I try and access User Accounts from the Control Panel, I get "Wrong number of arguments or invalid property assignment".
At the end of the day it doesn't bother me too much, as I'm hoping to leave the school (and this is a school laptop) I'll just copy my stuff off, format it and give it back anyway...
