Customise folder

Hi, does anyone have a problem with pupils using the customise folder wizard in win2k to put background pictures in a folder?

It's driving us mad!!! I can't find a GP to stop it. And I don't know if there's a script that will remove all the current settings in pupil folders.

There's no GPO setting. You can do it manually like this though.

Open Windows Explorer, click Tools, Folder Options. On the General tab,
under Tasks, click "Use Windows Classic folders"

I'm sure I stopped that a while back - no idea where the hell it would be tho'! *documentation, documentation - hehe!

Does it not make a file called desktop.ini in the folders. Perhaps you can do a server side search where the user folders are kept and search in those, and the delete the desktop.ini files.

Thanks ninjabeaver (cool name by the way) you put me on the right track. Went into a kids folder and found desktop.ini but when I looked into it, it didn't have anything relating to the background picture. However, I also found a hidden folder called 'folder settings' and in there was 'background.bmp' When I deleted the folder settings folder, it returned the appearence of the folder to what it should be.

Problem solved! However, we all know it's never THAT simple with microsoft.

I did a search for 'Folder Settings' (remembered to set the search up to include hidden files/folders). When I selected all the results and then deleted them, it put them in the Recycle bin on the server. However, it did more than that. It also put a copy of them into the recycle folder of EVERY user area on the share. Weird? Yes, very, but that's exactly what it did! When I emptied the recycle bin on the server, the recycle bins in the user folders also cleared.

Work that one out!

So I need to write a script to delete all the folders called 'Folder Settings'. Any ideas?

Hang on. If you setup a 'folder settings' folder however you want. Then place a copy of it in the user folders but only give them read access to the folder. wont that fix it?

I'd just routinely delete the folders at logoff - it will annoy the little darlings more that way ;)

Right, I created a 'folder settings' and made it read only. Put it into the user folder at the top level and it stopped the user from changing anything at that level.

Bigger problem. How do I copy my read only 'folder settings' into every user'a folder at every level? And what if they create another folder after I have copyed the 'folder settings'? Surely they will be able to customise any new folder they create, since my 'folder settings' will not have been copied into there.

You need a script that recursively travels through a specified folder and drops this protected folder into each. Easy :o

Probably easier just to go through deleting them ;)

Check out the scripts board for a script with recursion for deleting files.

You can save space and make it more maintainable if you use junction points.

wot about wallpaper - anyone need to get rid of that? Could that be removed in a similar way - or did I miss something?

The best way to get rid of wallpaper is with some hot water and a little washing up liquid and a good scraper.

If you were meaning desktop wallpaper, then group policy is the best way to tackle that - disable active desktop.

With regard to this post, I think it will be easier to do a search and delete every now and again.

Here's what I tried out yesterday and now "Set as wallpaper" doesn't work but you do *have* to set the Active Desktop to enable to perform a fixed backdrop like this :)

I've used GP so that the desktop is completely blank, with no icons, no backgroung, control panel locked out etc. All they get a the blue desktop, and there is nothing they can do about it.

I had a sly plan with where this is going tho you see....

A background stating a AUP and that if you dont agree, then you need to log off immediately and that by using "this" computer, you are agreeing to the terms of the AUP :)

It'll do for now - the image is pretty crap but I haven't installed Macromedia Studio on my pc yet lol
