I have had to change the motherboard in a friends computer. As I thought I get the blue screen of death when i try to boot into Windows XP. I have tried repairing the windows install but with no success. Is there a way I can recover from this please?

Never did find the repair option would work. I've usually gone through the setup and asked it to install a copy on top of the existing setup and it has integrated the old software settings into the new setup, short of a few drivers that need installing that are specific to the new motherboard. Can't remember off hand which option it is but ist a bit further on in the installation that the repair option. Sorry can't be more specific but hope it helped anyway.
What was the stop message on the BSOD ?
Safe Mode working ? Anything in the Event logs.......
The only way to fix is to install over the top, you will keep most of the installed software. You need a new Hal and this is the way you get it.
You can also make quick and dirty images like this for ghost, but its not the most reliable way of doing so :)

Not much use now, but I've run sysprep with the full mass storage list in the past before changing the board to a different chipset. You don't have to use the options that change the sid etc, just the hardware detection wizard.

Ah, other people do the sysprep method! And the HAL change. I'm so glad - i thought it was just me..:p

whether you are changing a motherboard and using the same hard disk with it, or moving the hard disk to a new mother board the same rule applies. The hard disk controller driver is going to cause you problems every time.
come on people..... this is windows XP! use the new board as an excuse to do a complete reinstall! pain in the ass i know but think of all that lightening fast speed you get for the 1st month or so :D
I've had this problem before even after sysprep.
Was to do with the IDE Controller being incompatiable with the new motherboard so now I always remember to check it's using a Standard IDE Controller when I take an image.
I've now sucessfully used this technique 3 times to take images off exisiting machines and transfer them to new hardware :D
(I wish I'd know about it years ago!)
Yesterdays success was in transferring from a Dell laptop with a broken screen onto a new Fujitsu laptop.
When I re-booted, the FJ complained it needed windows activating but going through the telephone activation and then re-entering the key from the broken Dell got it past that.
(Obviously we could argue that is a technical contradiction of the OS licence but no-one has lost any money here - the new machine already had a licence so I'll not be worrying about Mr Gates sending the boys around :P)
And FJ supply their drivers on a CD and have a program called DeskUpdate that just does all hard work of installing the correct one :D
I think if the drivers hadn't been on a CD, I't would have taken a bit more time as the FJ initally didn't recognise my USB stick so I'd recommend having a CD burner/disc around if trying this out.
