Word in Safe Mode

I have a user, who every time she opens Word it opens it in safe mode. It asks if you want to open the document in safe mode, to which you reply yes and go's away and does a recovery then you are in, albeit in safe mode still.

I have tried to run detect and repair a few times but this has no effect, just seems to try to do something with Front Page.

I checked the help files about turning this off but what that offered doesn't do anything either. There is nothing disabled. The next time you open word it issues the standard error panel asking if you want to send to Microsoft or not. At this point I ran the debug option which pointed a failure to Visual Studio 2005. When you open this it says that there is an error in a Winword application.

I have tried going back to last known good config but no joy there either.

Has anyone had this type of problem before?

No not as yet. That was to be an option if no-one had another solution.

We've had a similar problem to this in the past, turned out to be caused by the Normal.dot template - found in C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates.

Try replacing this file with a copy from another PC and see if this resolves your problem! :)

You dont need to use normal.dot from another machine, you can just delete the file. If you dont want to delete it you could also just rename normal.dot to normal.old. If it doesn't exist, it will be created on the first launch of word.

It can also cause problems in other office apps as they all have a link to normal.dot.

If you hold the Ctrl key down and launch MS Word, it will always ask you whether you wish to start in Safe Mode. Check the Ctrl key isn't stuck!
