My quick fix seems to have worked - no hitches printing over the last week.
So to summarise, I re-installed the printer using standard tcp/ip port and then did a browse for the drivers.
Disabled bi-directional (don't know whether important or not - I'll change it back in a month and see what happens)
Unshrared the old setup - re-used the same share name on the new setup.
Left the workstations previously setup alone (hopefully saved myself a bit of a job there :) )
If it lasts another week - I'll call it a result :)
... and if it doesn't you'll call it something a whole other order of impolite ;)
