Printing issues with RM CC4 & CC4a
We are an RM school (supported by our LA) running Windows 2008R2 virtual servers and Windows 7 (32bit) workstations. We finally completed our migration to Windows 7 over the summer holidays and since then have seen no end of issues with printing in classrooms.
We run a Windows 2008 (Standard 32bit) print server with PrintManagerPlus as our print tracking software. The issue we have is very transient in nature which is making it really difficult to try and pin down and make a solution.
When a student logs in, the printers may or may not map correctly (some or all of the assigned queues). Rebooting the computer sometimes brings the printer(s) back and as a result we have been "managing" to cope so far.
Manually attempting to map the printer (on a machine where automapping has filed) returns the message "Windows cannot connect to the printer. The specified port is unknown".
Looking at the event logs on the machines give an error that the spooler service is crashing as follows:

The rooms this is mainly happening in all have HP CP3525's (Colour laser) although we have seen the issue randomly in some other areas with different printers. However we have updated the "original hp downloaded" driver with the Windows 7 and 2008 embeded PNP drivers but this has not resolved the problem.
At the same time as this is causing issues, over the summer we installed (or rather the LA) CC4 Anywhere (Citrix). At this time (due to previous bad experiences with 64Bit drivers) I created another 2008 (32bit) print server. I then created 32 bit queues for the required rooms and then added the 64bit drivers to them. However since the start of September we have had no ability to print at all. When testing we can occasionally see printers map as a member of staff (BUT not consistantly) but never as a student.
I am tearing my hair out here and neither I, the LA team or RM can find a way to really resolve either issues. The latest advice that has come back is really to build a new print server and gradually move printers over to try and identify which one could be causing the issue.
There was also a between the lines hint that HP drivers are (*(&^*&^%^ and that other manufacturers such as Brother/Samsung or others were better (obviously while trying hard to not "officially" recommend a manufacturer.
