We are having a problem installing SQL 2005. The installation gets all the way to the end where it says creating the folder E:\program files\Microsoft SQL Server and throws up an error message about how it cannot create it. Now the user we are logging on as is full network admin and has full rights to install and make folders.

Sorry for butting in to this thread, but am looking at getting sql 2005 installed for sims also.
Was wondering whether there was anything special needed to be set up for sql for sims? Or whether if I just go through and install the default etc, it would be fine?

I think you just need to install it as an upgrade. Well thats what our SIMS lady was telling me.
2005 is a straightforward install. If you already have 2000 you can install it side by side without effecting the older version at all - this is what we did to prepare our server for the migration. It needs to be patched to Service Pack 2 for use with SIMS, but you only need to install the basic sql bits - unless you use and understand all the optional tools, documentation and languages.
As I recall the install is straightforward but you must put in an sa password and it must be 'strong' one - it's needed for the sims migration so make sure you make a note of it ! You will also need to give it an instance name and this needs to be different to the existing SIMS one if its on the same server. Took us about 1.5 hours including service packs and windows updates.
The problem we had was that it installed it on the default C:\ even though we selected to install it on E:\. We needed to install all the SQL options IE reporting services etc
Once installed there is nothing to do in Sims.net, it works just the same. Be careful though as there is a current problem that all new workstation installations, installed after SQL2005 are incredably slow. Capita are working on this.

Install as an upgrade? no, we installed side by side, then switched over to 2005 using the SIMS tool with the august update.
just beware, if you want the management tools you'll need to go through the installer and select them - they don't seem to come by default.
As for the folder problem, how much space is there on E:\? have you also checked its not a write protected drive?
