Love the humour there :D
I hate that program, Microsoft should publish it on Windows/Microsoft update
Re: Microsoft Desktop Search
Geez shouldn't you have like declined it in WSUS or somethin?
Re: Microsoft Desktop Search
It was automatically approved with my current patch only settings :|
Re: Microsoft Desktop Search
Yup just seen that today as well :( Thats 330 machines that need re-imaing as we need to take that off, don't want that search stuff adding into roaming profiles.
Microsoft have put it on Autoupdate as an Optional Update on the main WU site but stuffed it in the WSUS main bit.
Re: Microsoft Desktop Search
I hate that bloody thing, all our machines got it automatically unfortunitely, now gonna be hard to get rid of it. That main problem I have with it is it doesn't work properly!
Luckily our student machines already have the notification area hidden so the kids can't get to it. Can't see a useful reason for the notification area to be there, so we removed it.
Mike.
Re: Microsoft Desktop Search
We had the notification area on for printing - if your job got stuck you could cancel it via the notification icon.
Anyone know if MS are going to rectify this? Set it to uninstall via WSUS?
Re: Microsoft Desktop Search
Strange - I haven't got this on mine but I always manually approve.
Fat chance of them rectifying it - an update the other week seems to have broken something that installs client WSUS updates and antivirus engine updates on ALL our PC's here :x

We give the students a shortcut to print manager for this, there's no harm in this as GPO restricts them and stops them doing things they shouldn't. The only useful thing we had in the system trays was the volume control, but we added a shortcut for this to the desktop. We also have the clock hidden on our student machines, as if it's there then students tend to logoff the second the clock changes to the end of lesson time, and don't wait for the teacher to end the lesson.

Re: Microsoft Desktop Search
Yeah I got this as well, I unapproved it when I found out about it but guessing its gonna install on all machines anyway cause it will have already been downloaded to the machines ready to install at the time I have set in GP.
Re: Microsoft Desktop Search
The same thing's happened here, how do I hide/disable the notification area in GPO?
I so want to rain death and awfullness on microsoft at the moment...
Re: Microsoft Desktop Search
Download the ADM file for WDS and disable it from running.
download.microsoft.com/download/D/2/7/D271C570-0C2F-4B8D-9A17-50750D28DBB3/DesktopSearch.adm
Just in the process of adding it GP now....
Re: Microsoft Desktop Search
A way to uninstall would be more helpful though.
Re: Microsoft Desktop Search
@ Rhyds: user config > start menu and taskbar > near the bottom
@TeddyKGB: MS did mess with IE7 in WSUS - so hopefully there will be similar with WDS
@mullet_man: have applied that adm now.
Strange how this hasn't had wider publicity yet.

It's got teh attention of slashdot
http://it.slashdot.org/article.pl?si...30223&from=rss
"The Register is reporting that the blogosphere is alight with accusations of Microsoft forcing Windows Desktop Search on networks via the 'automatic install' feature of Windows Update — even if they had configured their systems not to use the program. Once installed, the search program began diligently indexing C drives and entire networks slowed to a crawl."
