Wireless become unreliable
Hi all.
I recently got a new machine for home, I have a wireless setup and the new machine is a desktop with a wireless adapter (netger WG111T) the router is a Netgear DSL ROuter. anyway:
Since installing the new machine now on XP as Vista was so slow. The internet is very unreliable and one minute it works fine next it doesnt. some times slow some times fast...
Internet is with NTL/Vigin Media- I have reset the router but still there is this unreliable solution.
any ideas- what could the problem be...
any help would be great
thanks
Re: Wireless become unreliable
download a program called netstumbler and see if any other networks are using the same channel as you. This would cause interference and would be tempermental as you described.
Re: Wireless become unreliable
I'd suspect interference from other nearby wireless networks or other devices which radiate noise in the same radio band (microwaves, baby monitors, radio controlled cars/planes, cordless phones).
Re: Wireless become unreliable
There is a cordless phone on the same desk as the computer also a baby monitor on on the evenings.... Will check tonight.
But - These were in place when the old machine was and there wasnt the problem then.
Maybe there is another wifi in the are affecting this...
Re: Wireless become unreliable
If you can alter the channel on your router try that this will help if it is interference from another wirless signal
Re: Wireless become unreliable
i had problems with the cordless phones and a Netgear access point
Re: Wireless become unreliable
It could be interference from surrounding wireless networks as your symptoms seem to suggest. We've gone from being the only one to now being one of a dozen in the immediate area. Most of them must be run by numpties as they are all on ch6 with WEP so God knows what sort of signal they are getting. We check on a regular basis to make sure no-one is using the channels that we use.
Re: Wireless become unreliable
A few years ago I tried a wireless router (sorry, can't remember the make) with my machine, and as soon as the phone rang the connection dropped. These were DECT phones. Someone told me that this was a known problem. Since going back to cable there hasn't been a problem.
Re: Wireless become unreliable
I am on a Ethernet cable at home you can't go wrong.
Re: Wireless become unreliable
any other issues? Just incase? lol
thanks all
Re: Wireless become unreliable
what with who you talking to?
Re: Wireless become unreliable
I have a Maplin Wireless Video Extender that I use to change the Sky Box Channel downstairs from the bedroom.
It has 3 Channel Settings -
1 Knock out My Wifi
2 Knock out mine and the neighbours Wifi
3 Knock out the entire streets Wifi.

Re: Wireless become unreliable
I had a neighbour a couple of months ago have the cheek to knock on my door one Sunday morning and ask if I had a wireless network and if I did could I change the channel if I was using channel 10 as he was getting interference on his! I told him to p*** off.
