Home directory not mapping

I have this weird problem. Basically everyone has their H: drive mapped via their active directory user object to a share on the server. Other mapped drives are done with a login script.

Over the past few days the H: drive of users has been mapping to \\server\share$ instead of \\server\share$\username. This has only started happening this past week but we haven't changed anything. The only commonality I think is it always seems to happen when one particular logon server processes the logon, but it is intermittent and doesnt do it all the time

Any ideas?

there is a GPO called "map users home directory to the root of the share". I can't imagine why it would have turned itself on.

Are your sysvol shares replicating OK? look in the event logs on all the servers and, if necesary run frsdiag. this would eliminate the "rogue server" possibility.

OK all this seems OK, I can see sysvol replicating and all the version numbers match up after a change. FRS on both DC's don't have any errors.

I notice that on clients I ocassionaly get an "MrXSMB 3019" error - "the redirector failed to determine the connection type". Apparently this is normal but could it have anything to do with the homedrive being an SMB share?

Having googled for a bit it seems I am not the only one and the solution appears to be to enable the "wait for network before login" option. Seems to make sense however will this affect staff laptops who take their laptops off site? Im worried incase the laptop wont let them logon when at home etc.. (they use cached domain credentials)

Having looked on our DC it doesn't seem to be there either. You haven't been using Vista/ws2008 have you? It must be one of the Vista policies.

Alas - good find my friend but it was not that, checked all policies that are being applied and that setting is set correctly.

I suppose I could just set it in the login script AS WELL AS setting the homedrive in AD, because stuff like Ranger outpost still uses it.

Would have been nice to get to the bottom of it though - ever feel like you're just papering over the cracks? ;)

We've been seeing this behaviour on and off for the last 9 months or so.

Quite frustrating.

You say its intermittent and doesnt happen all the time...

I am sure you have checked, but are the permissioins on the sub folders in this share correct? If the Z is mapped to the root of the share, are they allowed to double click their folder (username)?

intermittent - Is this just few users of random?

If you get it happening quite often, I would conduct a test by placing 10 users shares on different share on same server then 10 users on another server all together, this may rule out a few items!!!

Yeah, permissions are all OK. I didnt have time to pin point it in the end. I just enabled wait for network in the default domain policy. Takes a bit longer to get logged in but this problem hasn't reared its ugly head since
