Restore active directory

Hi,
Has anyone ever done this? We were looking at Windows server 2008 r2 backup options but for restoration it requires the same type of hardware. :confused2: It isn't something which you ever want to do but certainly not for real. Just wandered how hard this might be.

These features include Shadow Copies of Shared Folders,Windows Server Backup tools and Windows Recovery Environment.
