Running Iexplore not Explorer as shell?
Thinking of setting up some old machines as Espresso stations. So want to use IE as the shell.
I know CSE used to replace explorer shell with their own front end in 98. Could you do the same with IE and have it so the user couldn't close it?
Any thorts?

Re: Running Iexplore not Explorer as shell?
You can change the shell via a GPO, then use a registry edit to autologin the machine as your 'espresso' user.
Reg hack attached! :D
Re: Running Iexplore not Explorer as shell?
I agree with Ric..
the registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
contains a 'Shell' Key where you can specify iexplore.exe instead of using GPO's.. not sure what key to use if on Win98. I would go the GPO way and put the pc's in their own container like Ric suggests.. im suggesting the reg key in case you dont want them on the domain.

I'd use Firefox personally. :)

Re: Running Iexplore not Explorer as shell?
I think mainly because Windows has so many security settings in Group Policies for it, ie6 is very versatile in a domain environment.
Firefox is the best browser Ive ever seen, but like i said, not ideal for schools. What if you didnt want them to download files via firefox or not give them access to certain things? Maybe im too new to Firefox, but i havent seen anyway to do the security things in ie6.
Re: Running Iexplore not Explorer as shell?
You can edit certain files to remove certain features etc. Not as easy as GPOs but still doable. There are examples about for creating booth type lock downs of FF.
Re: Running Iexplore not Explorer as shell?
Use the frontmotion community edition and distribute it via AD.
http://www.frontmotion.com/Firefox/fmfirefox.htm
Also grab the ADM files from the same page.
In the OP's situation, I'd extend Firefox with the following extension.
https://addons.mozilla.org/extension...nfo.php?id=954

cool.. i'll look into that.
