Anybody used PING?

I've been trying out PING (Partimage Is Not Ghost) for a few days, and have found that it is superb at ghosting and restoring images. I particularly like the fact that I can make a bootable DVD and just restore from that.

However, with our newer computers the file is too big to fit onto 1 DVD. I know there is a way to split it onto several DVDs - but it would still need 5 of them to do the fully HDD. So, I have the files on an external HDD.

PING can see the External drive, and I believe it can even see the files it needs to restore the drive, but just when I would expect it to start restoring it shows the screen that implies it's about to just make another image rather than restoring the one it already has.

Has anybody else come across this, or know if I am doing anything seriously wrong?

Thanks, but I was trying to do it locally. I have used PXE in the past, and (probably due to our wonderful school network) it would upload the file at about 1Mb/minute - which not a very useful speed to upload about 12Gbs!

I realised that PING has their own support forum, so I will probably ask them directly when I have a chance.

thanks for pointing out PING to me, i may have to start using this as we are not allowed to use Ghost...

why can't you use ghost?

I've imaged boxes to USB HDD using imagex via BartPE... and it will work the other way around.

cant use ghost because of licensing issues.......say no more.

We don't use ghost because of the licensing. Plus, PING doesn't need me to root around to find the specific network drivers or USB controls. It's quite clever really. Except when it stops wanting to restore an image. Gah!

Probably!

So, I'll just warn people that I used PING to ghost an image across a network. It didn't do it very well, so now I have several computers that won't start properly. Thank goodness it's the holidays!
