    its all change with 2012 and really is quite simple - datacenter licensing makes sense if you have lots of VM's - there is a tipping point to where lots of standard licenses is cheaper.

    Yeah, we've decided that we're going to get 3x 2012 Datacenter licenses. 1 for each VM host as the new 2012 licensing is per server rather than per CPU.

    Not quite right...

    It is per server but a single datacenter license gets you unlimited servers on a dual cpu server - if your servers had 4 sockets per machine then you would need 2 x datacenter licenses per machine

    Yes, you're right. Luckily our hosts are only dual CPU
