I've decided to retire one of my few remaining Win98 VM file/print servers this morning - it went dark at 9:09 am
Spookily, it said there were still 3 users connected to it

1 down - how many to go ?

That's absolutely crazy! Why was there still Win 98 in use in 2012!?
I'm glad you finally saw the light and upgraded to ME.

I don't run my networks as domains so any CIFS compliant OS can be used as a file server.(I've used Win98/Linux/W2k3 and W2k8 )That's absolutely crazy! Why was there still Win 98 in use in 2012!?
When I added in W2k3 machines (for ease of DHCP/Print serving for XP Clients) I normally just VMd the old WIn98 machine and left it running and didn't need to change any shorcuts to server held shares/shortcut/apps.
I have a very easy life not having to worry about GPO/user profiles etc
And I don't have to pay the annual MS tax

No he realised that OS/2 would work better...

There's no need for that sort of language!he realised that OS/2 would work better.

It's true actually, Windows 98 had no limit when it came to concurrent connections. You must of had a rock solid firewall to keep it protected!![]()

There's always Poledit.exe and TweakUI.exe for Win95-XP clients. And in addition, the local GPO (gpedit.msc ?) and local security policy ( *sec.msc ?) for XP-? workstations.
Mind you, with no local file security on 95/98 someone could always get around them if they knew how.
Bruce.

ah! remember those good old days of NT 4 workstation, and with SP6a, jolly good! Still shake at the sound of the modem when checking of e-mails
....not forgetting things were a great deal easier to set up and configure unlike now. OS/2 back then was also a far better product. IBM just did not market it correctly.
Yes but that was about the whole extent of Win95 security
Hmm not quite true, I forgot you could also share folders/printers and set permissions to restrict access to network users, and when on a workgroup you could password protect them instead. Those were the days!
Thanks, Bruce.
