    Media Server

Does anyone use a media server in school? We have lots of Videos which are used around the school and are stored on a shared drive for the teachers. I want to see if there is a decent media server which anyone can recommend with a server and client side? I know this can be done through media player, but I wondered if there was anything else anyone has used?

    Thanks

If it's any help - we've played with Mediacore which seems OK.

    Thanks!! Will look into this.

We are trying to achieve the same thing with teachers having a central media server that they stream their videos/music from

I'm looking at Media Asset Management solutions - the one Oxfam use is open source:

ResourceSpace: Open Source Digital Asset Management (DAM) Software - Home

I used to use this a few years ago. You can still get it as a free version but currently on sale at $49

We use Helix Media Library which is basically a YouTube-like front end to the various Real streaming services. All hosted on-site. It's pretty good

Media Library Software - Blackboard and Moodle Streaming Integration

This is our site. You have to authenticate to get to the vast majority of the content. Please excuse the horrible punnerfic name, I didn't choose it and actively fought against it being implemented

I honestly can't remember. I don't think it was massively expensive in the grander scheme of things (certainly nothing like what we play for the likes of Blackboard) but it was in the thousands of pounds, maybe something like 3k?

It does depend on which modules you buy.

We just have a seperate shared drive with videos on it linked to our students and teacher desktops.

All computers have VLC installed on them so its as simple as clicking on the files.
