Ubuntu (20th February 2008)
Hi
I am trying to add the Terastation to the Domain but a few of the fields do not allow me to enter data..
AD Full Domain
AD Full Domain Controller
AD Administrator Name
AD Administrator Password
So it fails in adding to the domain..
I am now in a WORKGROUP mode with Delegate Authority to External SMB Server ticked.
But there's more
I mapped the "Backup" share to "M" on the file server with Backupexec installed .. but when I try to create a Backup-to-Disk Folder in Backup Exec to the share on "M" it says
"The System cannot find the path specified"..
Yet can access the drive OK from Windows Explorer..
Any Ideas ?

I thought I had read this elswhere on this site?
Im sure it involved something like having a local Terrastation Admin A/c that was also a Domain Admin ?
Also watch out for clock skew, if the clock on the Buffalo is out of sync with the DC LDAP will not work! Set both systems clock in sync!
Finally, there is a limit I belive of 1000 AD accounts/groups that can be imported into this devices ACL and this alone has resulted in a number of them being returned or used as backup devices.
Off to search the site now for those other Buffalo tech notes...
Grommit,
Try setting up an AD Domain admin level account in your Windows domain using THE SAME user name and password as you are using to administer the Buffalo...
Humor me,
if your Terastation Admin account is "Admin" and the pswd is "password"
create the same account in the Windows AD.
Then use this account from the Buffalo GUI to join the domain.
Then tell me if it works!
:-(
Tried it
Error
Enter an ADS Domain Name.
Enter an ADS Domain Controller.
Enter an ADS Administrator's Name.
Enter the Administrator's Password.
Maybe I need to wait a bit and see if the account had settled in..
Whats the firmware version of the Terastation?
I'm on 1.03 which doesnt seem to have any of the ADS settings; however, it works absolutely fine on my W2K3 domain
The only thing I had to play around with was ensuring that DNS / WINS settings were correct.....
Funny i have the same problem with backupexec and from what i read from the veritas site, you are supposed to put in a UNC path (i.e. \\ts-htgl000\share) but i havent got this to work either. I finally gave up and used ntbackup instead and that works fine with UNC path (ntbackup has the same problem with using a mapped drive).
As for you AD problem, what do you mean you cant enter any details? The web interface wont let you type in those textboxes?
I don't want to mislead anyone, but there is an interesting factor that may help you resolve these issues.
During Server 2003 SP1 MS dropped support for LanMan1 and earlier versions of Keberos.
As a result it is impossible to establish a trust relationship between disparate Domains using the old Domains and Trusts routines when one domain is native and the other mixed mode!
Using the trick described above solve this in a Windows trust relationship, however I belive there is a similar situation between Win2k3 and Samba2
The old DNS/Wins chestnut can be quickly eliminated by using ip addresses instead of server names in UNC paths.
My bet is that it's SP1/2, Keberos, Samba related.
The buffalo is unable to establish a secure channel during the domain membership request.
Use a packet analyser (ethereal or NM3) to digest the comms between the buffalo and the DC during a domain joining session that should show why it's not working.
Any idea why it takes 14 Hours to back up 140gb with NTBackup onto the TeraStation ?
Does the Terastation have a Gig Network Card or 100mps.. and how long would 140gb take to go through a 100mps ?
Also managed to add it to the Domain by upgrading the fimrmware to 1.4... went a bit postal so put it back down to workgroup...
now it says from the DC Server (that I am working on the Terastation from) that this station is not authorised to connect ?!?! eh? .. yet from my PC I cna connect to the share ..?
help :-)
Just been told by the Buffalo helpdesk they do not support server operating systems on client OS's
Managed to Map the TERASTATION USING THE \\IP\SHARE..
but Backupexec is refusing to use the IP as it says invalid char and the mapping doesn't work because it says "THE SYSTEM CANNOT FIND THE PATH SPECIFIED"
anybody want to buy a kicked in beaten mangled piece of Metal ?
Much like my Infrant ReadyNAS, it has a pathetic CPU, you aren't going to write to it with RAID5 at much more that 5-6MB/s, at least not from what I've seen.Originally Posted by Grommit
In reply to you later question, I had Backup Exec 10 working fine writing to the network share, but then my ReadyNAS has always worked with AD too :P
No doubt Netgear will turn them into a steaming pile of junk now they got their hands on them![]()
I was able to successfully able to add the terastation to backup exec but i still have to test it.
i used \\ipaddy\share
mapped the drive with the ip and share as well (but may not be needed since i didnt use the mapped drive when selecting the folder in the back up to disk wizard) a few things i did as well was log in as the veritasbe acct with domain admin group and created an account in the buffalo terastation as well with veritasbe acct as well.
will be besting the backup to disk soon but i do need some explanation on what some things mean such as:
max size for Backup to disk files (does this mean i have to set this to how big my full back up will be?)
---
other questions what is everyone else settings set to when doing your back up to disk. i.e. how big is ur back up. how long does it take. what type of servers you backing up? :-)
excuse any errors i'm in a hurry...
Hi mate,
Dont give up !!!
we have backup exec 11d and are currently backing up to a 1tb terrastation while our NAS is out for repair....!!
what would you like to know?
"Managed to Map the TERASTATION USING THE \\IP\SHARE.."
This was disbaled in version 9 up i think, stops people getting round their licencing.
heres how ours is setup on backup exec:
![]()
maximum size backup to disk files:10gigs now is this 10gigs the total ammount you are trying to back up? is this 10gigs the machine that backup exec is installed or is a pc/server across the network?
still learning about 11d we've upgrade from 9
over all i hate veritas but it was purchased without my say![]()
