We use redirected desktop for staff, pupils and admin . The deputy head teaches and also does admin in the office. When she is working in the office I want her desktop to show the admin software and not the teaching software. I suppose she could have 2 logins but ideally GP would know which machine she is using and redirect the desktop accordingly. Is there such a thing?

You can do different redirections based on group memberships but that won't help.
Unless you set the redirection in a gpo on each ou.
i.e the teaching machines are in their own ou's which have one desktop redirection.
Then her office machine is in it's own ou with a policy to redirect her desktop to the second location?

Basically we have 4 ou’s. Admin machines, curriculum machines, admin users and staff users. Each ou uses a different gp but I understood that the desktop redirection only affects the user and not the machine.

The group plicy applies to machine and user.
If a user logs onto machine a in ou a with group policy a
They will get group policy a
If a user logs onto machine b in ou b with group policy b
They will get group policy b
So if a and b have different desktop redirections then their desktop will be redirected accordingly.

Only with loopback processing enabled tho' ??
Mine is setup like this, but it's better to do it via login script - assign start menu according to PC name.

Hmm yes I do mine based on the user rather than machine so I have in the student gpo their desktop redirected to a share and everyone else to their desktop folder.

How about this then.
Create on your user gpo 2 gpo's one say teaching desktop and one normal desktop.
In each one cnofigure where yuo would like the desktop to be redirected.
Now do a wmi filter on each one so that the teaching one only applies to teaching pc's and the normal one applies to her office pc.
SELECT * from Win32.ComputerSystem WHERE name <> OfficePC
SELECT * from Win32.ComputerSystem WHERE name = OfficePC
First one she can log on anywhere that isn't her office pc.
Second one is for when she logs onto her office pc.

Just tested this on my virtual domain and it works.
Same user logging onto two clients gets either desktop1 or desktop2 depending on which client they log on to and the outcome of the wmi filter.
You may have to include the machine name in quotes as I have on my setup.

What I wrote about start menu redirection will also work for desktops.
