We run a win2003 server box to manage all our printers - in the last two weeks the print spooler on this server keeps stopping for no reason - I have checked event viewer and get an error ID 7034 The Print Spooler service terminated unexpectedly.
This happens very randomly and cant seem to find what might be causing it - Any ideas ? this has been happening on and off for the last two weeks.
Buggy print drivers. Hunt for updated ones.
There was a printer I installed two weeks ago which I have just removed all drivers and installed the latest - waiting to see if it goes down again. All our printers do have the latest drivers - could be this one (time to get rid of all the brother printers).
I have over 64 networked printers and a lot of these are brothers. We have all updated drivers on them all and we have hardly any problems. THe server is only one year old and has 4gb memory.
Just double check you printer drivers.
Its just strange that this would occur all of a sudden,, everything was working fine and then all of a sudden the spooler goes - very annoying cause it stops all network printers.
Have you got the service set to restart after each failure?
Do a scandisk. If there is a problem with the disk, it might have problems writing the files to disk before they are printed. Particularly if the machine isn't used for anything else. It could be repeatedly trying to access a duff bit of disk.
There is a known memory leak in the 2003 server stemming from network printers. I can't find the KB article but we have had to make sure that we reboot over night our server with the printers on.
Our symptoms are that the server will suddenly just grind to a halt, become more and more unresponsive until you can't even log on to the server. Much fun had when that first happened. I'll keep digging for the article.
The spooler hasnt gone down today - will keep monitoring it - sounds like it was the driver I installed a while back.
Will let everyone know.
