i just downloaded some software which when installing asked me if i wanted to recieve alerts and asked for details of an smtp server on the machine. i skipped past it, i always do, but i got to thinking i want to understand this a bit better. I have exchange server 2003 on the network but not on this machine, is this what its asking for or can i install an smtp server locally? am lost any advice as always appreciated.

If the program needs to send informational email for alerts or warnings etc. it will be asking for either the hostname or IP address of a mail server it can use to do this.

Hi there,
I would point it at the Exchange server - no point in setting up another SMTP server just for one application.
Cheers

I have SMTP enabled on my laptop.
I need it for some Uni coursework, otherwise I wouldn't have bothered.
Having said that, it amuses the kids when I demonstrate spoofing emails!

I have used local Exchange 2003 servers to relay alerts. You may need to tweak the settings to allow relaying however.
